IIRC, Duci wanted to script recce missions, not of ships, but of ports and port facilities. To do so, he needed to use "dummy" or "phantom" ships ... and that might be why you locked on to "dolphins" that you couldn't see. Try turning your scope until the camera icon lights up, then click on it ... even it there's no ship visible.
