Attached drawing, by J.H. Hoowij, shows what was left of Doorman's force- cruisers Hr.Ms. "de Ruyter", USS "Houston", HMAS "Perth" and Hr.Ms. "Java" plus his only remaining destroyer, HMS "Encounter", passing the survivors of Hr.Ms. "Kortenaer" (she bears the unhappy distinction of being the first warship to be sunk by the IJN's "Long Lance" torpedo). Doorman detached HMS "Encounter", to pick up "Kortenaer"'s survivors and take them to Soerabaja. As it turned out, this left no destroyer to pick up the survivors of "de Ruyter" and "Java"- but Doorman would probably have ordered her to continue with "Houston" and "Perth".
