If you're helping people just so they can be grateful to you, what kind of unfulfilled life must you lead? John, let other people's problems be other people's problems. I'm sure in your line of work people who have brought themselves to ruin by committing a crime have blamed you for their arrest. Consider this the same type of issue.
Never let anyone play the guilt card on you because you accepted their help. So long as you are willing to lend help without strings, you should be free to accept help under the same terms. It's clear that you ARE that kind of person.
