You will get as many missions as you ask for. When you know your low on fuel....it's time to head back to base. With TMO you have the fuel icons that tell you maximum range at current speed to the waypoints you set, so always use that as a guide.
You don't get punished per say for not completing extra missions. If you've completed your primary mission and keep clicking the status buttom it will usually keep giving you more missions.
