I'm wondering if I shoulda tried this patch:

silent_hunter_3_dvd_1.4b_us.exe

It's on the same page:

Seems that's the proper one for US boxed DVDs.

<sigh>

edit: edited for typo. I was having fun playin the tutorial stuff. But I think I will try one more time to do a clean install and see if the US DVD patch works. Will report back.
