yes... they used a special procedure to escape while submerged, the level of water inside the compartment had to rise till pressure compessation was done to the other side of the hatch, i think they had some bubble of air just above of the lower end of the hatch collar, depends on dept. Iam not shure but i think after 40 meters, there is no chance to survive it. Temperature of sea water is also a important factor.
