Cortisone is used alot. They put it in after they've sucked the fluid out of the knee. It's supposed to somehow dry the fluid or something. Used to have cortisone pills too (Prednisolon or soemthing), but then my earlier doctor decided that, eventho the medication's sole purpose was to keep the knees 'dry' to prevent fluid building there, I should quit taking it.
