One of the things you can do is use SH3 Commander, the best tool ever created for the game, and a perfect complement to GWX. It lets you set the starting date for the first of any month. It also lets you do a quick shakedown patrol and then set the days in port to any amount you desire, so you can then start the next patrol just a week or so before September 1, the beginning of the war.
I just started a new career. On August 1 I just let the game start and ended the patrol immediately. I always leave Commander's Days In Base set to 'Random'. This time my next patrol started on August 21. I'm happy - I was on station for eight days when the war began.
