Ahha! Sounds like the sonar indication lines. Could it be that you are submerged when your seeing these lines that go in the general direction of the targets?
When you are surfaced you will get the little box indication all the time, submerged only when your scope is up and you see the target. Once the scope is lowered then the box indication will disapper and be replaced by the sonar lines.
