Most of the damage was from airplanes, only once or twice from escorts. I guess I was lucky.

The usual scenario from my previous careers: I'd spot a merchant, armed, but I'd say "hey, my gun is bigger than your gun!"
, and shoot the merchant. Sure, I'd sink it eventually, but not before I took some damage.
Then I'd attack a convoy and dive to escape, only to find that my hull is full of gun holes and can't sustain depth greater than, say, 100m. and the escorts would finish me off.

I don't know the exact percentage, because I modified it to have 100% realism, to disable the "Return to base" option.
