I don't know where you are in Michigan, but there are quite a few tracks within driving distance of Michigan that have big races coming up. As SteamWake says, racing is quite different in person - it's a total assault on the senses.

August 1 - Indycar at Kentucky (the track is in Sparta, on the northern edge of the state)
August 8/9 - Indycar and ALMS at Mid-Ohio
August 16 - NASCAR at Michigan (the track is in Brooklyn, SE of Ann Arbor)
August 16 - ALMS at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin (the Lake Express carferry across Lake Michigan is great)
August 30 - MotoGP at Indianapolis

If I were in the area I'd go to the Mid-Ohio event. ALMS is incredibly fan-friendly, and the wide variety of cars makes it fun to watch. The double-feature with Indycar is really a bonus. To cap it off you have Mid-Ohio itself, which is a great classic road course.
