Default Help me dust off my manual targeting skills...

Hey folks. I used to chill around here but I've stopped playing the game for a while... But now decided I'd try my hand at this again.

I re-installed the game with GWX gold, OLC mkiid & the TMT mod. Now I didn't use to play the game with OLC so that might be why I'm so confused... But where is my boat on the map?

I can use the rings tool in the periscope somewhat accurately but one thing I am missing is the ability to efficiently plot a target's location. The way I used to do was to make the observation - say 3400m down bearing 305 - and to go into the nav map to use first the angle tool to mark the correct bearing and then the ruler to measure out the correct distance. But that can't be done if I don't know where my own boat is. So how do I get around that?

The way I'm used to sinking stuff is plotting the course, getting ahead and waiting patiently for a 90AOB shot at a predetermined range, which I know precisely from having plotted their course and measured the distance between it and my boat on the map.

So what am I missing?

EDIT
Just thought that one possible solution would be to use the map as a drawing board... Aka pick an arbitrary point as the start and then track my own position by means of a stopwatch and dead-reckoning. I suppose that's how the real kaleuns did it back in the day. Anyone else do that? There must be an easier way.
