Also, ships in convoys have that nice tendency to line up in rows and collums. So if you manage to move alongside of them, and notice you are lined up to a row you know they are in a direction that is a certain angle to their course. 90 degrees if you are on the beam of the convoy. But you could also be behind a colum (direction is same as course), or looking at a diagonal of the convoy (then it's 45 degrees from the direction). Getting their course is very easy.
Same goes for their speed. If you stay lined up alongside them for a certain period of time you know you advance with the same speed. Just measure your own movement.
But getting inside the convoy is indeed a tricky thing. But other allready covered that.
