I've thought about being spotted for the periscope because there was no other factor accounting for ownship detection: periscope depth, engine stopped (thence enemy hydrophones should have been silent), about 1000mt 20° AOB, 5am: the destroyer at that distance suddenly turned on the lights (but why?, it's not that I went with active sonar pinging
