The Germans did eventually field the S-Gerät active sonar device on a cylindrical mount below the bow in their Type XXI U-boats. There were various attempts to retro-fit earlier models of active sonar gear in U-boats, but many captains mistrusted the devices, fearing their use would give their position away.
