Yeah, the M boats were BADLY overloaded by that 12" gun.
They were designated as "Monitor Submarines" although it was recorded at that time that; "The term is used, for want of a better one". Crew's called them Mutton boats because the gun mounting resembled a leg of mutton. As far as I can see it was an early equivilent of cruise missile submarines of today, bombarding land based targets from coastal waters. Although there also seems to have been a serious proposal to use the M boats to hunt down enemy cruisers...
