A cent is 1/100th of a dollar, so about half a UK penny. (We sometimes call them pennies too.) Back when you had 240 pence to the pound, and the pound was worth about $2.40, a cent was worth about a penny. New pence are worth 2.4 old pence, but the relative value of the pound to the dollar has declined.
