I don't see how having a smaller submarine would make much difference.
Essentially what I'm saying is that if you had a scale model of a car in SH4, and you put it down to, say, 100 feet, it would certainly -look- like it was 100 feet down.
I assume by 'the magnifying effects of water' you are referring to refraction? That only happens when light passes between materials of different densities. This might be the case if the submarine were really deep, and so the water was colder than above it, but that effect would disappear when the camera was in water of the same temperature.
