Well for starters stop using the deck gun as a primary weapon against merchants. You will fail at sinking many of them.

Your primary weapon is your torpedoes and the deck gun is used to finish off an already wounded ship hit by torpedoes not as a primary sinking tool.

If you look historically you will find very few cases of a Uboat only using its deck gun to sink a ship.

The deck gun simply was not meant to be used in such a manner.Against the very small targets like tugs and such ships it is effective but go against the merchants and you will have trouble.

Always put at least 1 torpedo into a merchant then follow up with the deck gun if needed and on larger merchants 2 torpedoes should be minimum. After that the deck gun can be used to finish off the target with little to no effort or alot of rounds needed.

Using the deck gun primarily is not only a waste of ammo but also puts you at bigger risk of being jumped by a destoryer or aircraft that may be patrolling nearby.
