Its not the only way to avoid you can run shallow and slow 3 or 4 knots and still avoid icebergs, there is a manual out there that aids in under ice ops its on subguru.com.
From what i see your running into ice shelves which sit below the water so in this instance yes being deep is good, sometimes bergs can go down to 800 to 1000ft depths so it depends on where you are in the world and if your in a rush.

Its simple logic hitting ice at speed is like ridding a push bike down hill at 50mph and slamming into a wall, as you guessed walls dont move so it will cause major damage to a submarine.

You do have to use the HF sonar to find bergs and avoid the best submarine fitted with this is both the 688i and akula, the kilo isnt any good it isnt designed for under ice and seawolf im not a fan of.
