I bet they didn't have radar though. Even 2 or 3 escorts early war are fairly easy to sneak by with patience, some intelligence gathering, good position, running decks awash, slow speed, and a little luck.
Radar makes it sooooo much more difficult to sneak in at night on the surface later in the war.

I believe that if you are still in hydrophone(submerged) or visual range(surfaced), you will get credit although I've been robbed a few times.
