Wikipedia says that an estimated 1 billion people caught the Spanish flu, so that number looks about right. There's a huge spread in the numbers regarding the Spanish flu.
The Spanish flu was unusual in that it was more deadly in younger and healthier patients. There are some signs that the same is true for the current swine flu.
