The IL2 overheat modelling is remarkably simple though: Once the engine temperature passes a certain limit an "OVERHEAT"-message appears. When that happens you have a certain time before the engine takes damage. This time is always the same regardless of speed, the amount of overheating, power setting, altitude etc. It only changes from one aircraft to another. Once this time has passed your engine is pretty much kaput

There's a catch here: The timer resets if the "OVERHEAT"-message disappers even for a second. So if the overheat-time for your aircraft is exactly four minutes and the you succeed to make the overheat message disappear at 3:58, no problems. You can now overheat another four minutes before damage occurs, and can repeat this (make message disapper, overheat again) for as long as you like.
