Rob: Easy way. On the compass there are two sets of numbers. The outer one will give you the heading of the boat. The inner one will always point to the bow of your boat (not North, as the larger one is marked). So if you get a report that the sighting is at 340, check the inner compass markings and head that direction. You don't have to be very accurate, as the sighted object is moving and won't be on that heading for long.
