Possibly, but he mentioned Hong Kong and Taiwan as contrasting examples. Both are prominent bastions of the free market, and enjoy much more individual freedom than mainland China. I think his intention was fairly clear.
I don't see what the big deal is, though. Hollywood is full of film stars that think other people need to be controlled and no one cares.
