I wouldn't go that far at all... to say that the Silent Hunter game was based on the movie Das Boot.
I would say that 'Das Boot' certainly fueled interest in U-boat and submarine warfare.
I would say that if the Silent Hunter game was based on anything... it may have been based on the 'Aces of the Deep' game by Sierra Dynamix... (or at least SH was a logical evolution following Aces of the Deep) which may predate the movie Das Boot.
