After 3 days of steady crashes i took a day off from playing with the problem and went golfing. While on the golf course it occured to me to check for conflicts in my display area.
I had recently updated my video card to a 512 mg radeon agp 8x video card and it had a conflict, lowered the agp from 8x to 4x and haven't had a crash in hundreds of hrs of gameplay since.

It is simply amazing at just what else
can be accomplished while on the golf course. I myself have solved many odd problems whilst in port and swinging my sticks on the ole' links.
