October 21, 1940. Following a confused convoy encounter in fog and 15ms winds in the Western Approaches, with one 8000 tonnes merchant going down after three torpedo hits, U-46 ran perpendicularly away at periscope depth and failed to notice a DD approaching in its baffles. With screws fast approaching the crew attempted a crash dive and hard starboard turn only to be blown out of the water by a concentrated depth charge salvo. The boat was on its 10th patrol with its original crew. There were no survivors.
