There are a couple factors you can adjust. Using notepad, open the file located in your SlientHunterIII\data\cfg\sensors.cfg

Make a backup of the original somewhere safe before you edit it. What you adjust depends on what ranges and what the weather is like when you have these problems. If its when its clear and you get detected at 8000m your crew cant detect the enemy until 7000m then increase the Visual range factor. The example below is from a stock game. These values are different depending on what mod your using. A higher value, makes your crew spot targets further away So if the value were say 1.0, try making it 1.4 instead and then test it out in game to see the effect.

Part of the trouble is none of these settings act alone but they all interact together. Visibility in fog is tough to get correct. If your problems are in fog, where you get fired at from 500m but you watch crew still hasn't detected the enemy, then lower the visual fog factor. In my example it shows as 1, so setting it to 0.6 would give you better visibility in fog because the lower setting makes fog have less impact. Again change it and test it out.

The down side is, you can get the daytime visibilty to the distance you want, but sometimes your night time visibility can become almost as good as during the day, which is unrealistic as well. So the settings always end up being the best compromise.

Note, from my experience, adding a different environment mod can have an impact on the distances your crew spots targets also. Environment mods may use different wave heights, which is another factor in visibility. The setting in the scene.dat file seems to have an impact on visibility. I prefer to use the environment that the uber mods came with as the developers have made the sensor settings to fit their specific environment. Though, it is fairly easy to adjust crews visibility using the sensors.cfg file.
