The StateMachine Controllers cause the leaks and sparks,
amungst other effects.

They also play a part in the Crew actions.

How the Watch Officer reacts to a Ship Spotted is just one example.

So, without ever messing with them?
I'd suggest a good look at those Controllers.

Now, they only look at the STATE of things.
Then redirect to other files.
Animations, effects, etc.

With very little time looking at the existing files?
I'd attempt building new StateMachine controllers in the needed dat files.
Then create the other dats needed to give the effect wanted.

The key to stop the sound effect is probably the hardest.
But I've not really looked at this whole thing.
It's just off the top of my head, and what I do know about the files.
