That is called nation survival while facing the odds defending their empire as last resort when the enemy has unlimited resources and technology...
They attacked Perl Harbour to give some advance in hope with a quick territory conquest on Pacific would give them enough resources to face/balance US in equal terms. But that back fired... Japan lack on resources even with new empire territories expansion at time (because had to transport); while US as a country had almost everything that needed to sustain production and replace while fighting two fronts... "lucky" far from two fronts as well.
resources was one of the factors... US had it concentrated... Japan had it disperced so needed to be transported from its vast territory expansion... (who builds fast deploys/replaces fast win's war)
For a little country without resources Japan made hell on Earth and also suffered the most on WWII.
But above all was the mentality a major player where even in our days; honour and respect still is something highly regarded and not seen on any other nation (but losing it gradually).
