The "do-hickey" was a net cutter. It was supposed to cut through enemy ASW nets. I have a few photos in one of my books of some early C boats that had them for a short time.
The VIIC has about a 2-3 second faster dive time. |

To tell you the truth, when I first saw pictures of a U-boat as a kid, I thought the net cutter was like what the Nautilus had to sink ships in the movie "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea."
