Its not tne extremists that are perverting islam - they actually are simply being very fundamental with their following of it. Study it and you will see it for what it is - a political path to power based on the threat or action of force, disguising itself as a religion.
Like any religion, Islam has its contradictions. For every passage advocating violence, you can find some that forbid it. The extremists are literally following parts of their religion, but they are also violating key parts of it.

Other religions can also be interpreted as advocating violence. Hindu nationalists have used their religion as justification for anti-Muslim violence in India. A Jew used his religion as justification for murdering the Prime Minister of Israel for trying to make peace with the Palestinians. The worst terrorist attack on the United States before 9/11 was carried out by a Christian fanatic. Christians used Christianity as a justification to slaughter other Christians in Northern Ireland.
