You and me must not be watching the same Hollywood. They get shot once and drop instantly. In real life, even if someone removes your heart from your body, you've still got 20 seconds to function and return fire.
That's inaccurate. If your heart is destroyed by a bullet, the sudden loss of blood pressure causes a nearly instantaneous lapse into unconsciousness. The same goes for hitting any major artery - if the blood flow to the brain gets interrupted in any significant way, you're going down - and it won't take 20 seconds. At BEST the brain retains 10 or so seconds of oxygenated blood to retain consciousness, but the individual's efficiency would be steadily declining throughout that time. However, that's assumes that there are no other traumatic effects from the wound (which is rarely ever the case).

In real life, the vast majority of people who get shot - anywhere on their body - drop instantly.
