Totally and unabashedly off topic, but where the hell did the expression "clean as a whistle" come from? It seems counter-intuitive to me. How clean can something be that someone is constantly putting in their mouth and blowing/spitting into?  |
It has it's origins in the phrase "clear as a whistle". The 19th century phrase "clear as a whistle" meant something was unmistakable or unambiguous. Over time clear morphed into clean. Not really sure why. I guess a pressurized steam whistle would be pretty clean and sanitary tho.
