No need to pretend about intel. By early 1942 the US was reading enough of Tojo's mail to intercept the Japanese invasion fleet in the Coral Sea, ambush and destroy the Japanese carrier force at Midway and shoot down Admiral Yamamoto himself while he was touring forward bases in the Solomons in a bomber.
Seems the submarines should get in on this action too.
