about "releasing your officers not having an effect" it would be nice to at least see their names show up on the roster with some sort of tonnage totals aside their names

I just reread this and felt that I had to comment. Just for realism's sake. The Kriegsmarine was much like the Royal Navy in that the Engineers were a separate division, and only took over command if there were no other officers left, unlike the US Navy in which every officer had to learn every job.
I only replace my CE with another 'Repair' or 'Machinist' qualified officer, and never let him do any of the other jobs, and never have anyone cross-trained to do that job.
Silly, I know, but that's the way I like to have my 'realism'.
