Actually that scenes and the depicting of the Vietcong is absurd. The vietcong was no lose band of rogues, but a very disciplined army with a tight and strict command structure, well led. It also was communistic by ideology. that they would engage in actions earning money by russian roulette, is very absurd, really. Same says an old German veteran correspondet, who as a young man fought in Indochine for The French, later was war reporter during the american war, repeatedly went out with the troops and into the battle, and once was cought on the wrong side of the border - then living for several weeks with the Vietcong and having been able, almost unhindered, to document their life and way of going. He also insisted that the way the Vietcong is depicted in most American war movies is scandalous and tells more about the hurt ego of a defeated superpower than about the VC.

I like the movie, but for different reasons, the description of psychological desintegration of normal life caused by war and violence per se.
