Thanks to your suggestion, I finally figured out 1) what happens when the RE_L is installed by JSGME, and 2) why I continued to receive supposedly deleted messages.
1) I thought that when RL_E is installed, messages_en in the
MODS folder is used by the game. Now I understand that the RE_L messages_en file
replaces the stock file in the SH3/data/campaigns/campaign folder, and that the game uses that folder (not the Mods folder). I also figured out that the stock message_en file is saved in the MODS/!BACKUP folder.
2) I had been editing the file in the MODS folder. Obviously, this had no effect on the file the game is using.
I have copied the edited file from the MODS folder to the SH3/data/.... folder. I think this case is closed.
