I can see where they're coming from in regards to "music videos", i.e. ones that just provide a slideshow to go along with a track.
But if you simply want to use background music, or use only a portion of a musical piece, effectively ensuring that your video does not provide an alternative to owning the music, then really, what's the point? It's not like anyone's making any money off of the music, or the artists are losing any. In fact, these videos provide free advertising more than anything else.
Why not just require that any commercial music used be attributed?
By going after these videos, they're preventing something that doesn't hurt the artist, while stymieing the creativity of others: the worst of both worlds. But, I guess that's what we've come to expect from the application of copyright law.
