This will be old news to most: A quick way of getting a sniper rifle in the start.

Go out of the main gate of Megaton and turn left, following the wall of the city around to the back. There are a few Giant moles so kill them. There is a large rock with a big branch sticking out behind it. Click that and inside is a Sniper Rifle, some ammo and a stealthboy which if sold will net you some nice Caps.
