My Slightly Subnuclear Mark 14 does nothing with the bubbles or range, only the boom, which it changes into a BOOM. I haven't had any unrealistic problems with torp wakes being spotted. Whenever it happens, it seems appropriate. I can watch targets avoid a John P Cromwell attack during the daytime and get tagged at night. I've never had one avoid at night or during a storm.
It occurs to me that your problem is in your question, wanting to extend the range of the Mark 18. You are shooting from too far away. If you're shooting from 800 yards, your torpedo's wake could be fluorescent red and you'd still get a hit. Long range shots are low probability shots, even if the target does not avoid at all.
