neon deon is correct on your way will make everything sinking you too easy, try increasing the shell hit points so only the shells damage you more. i would start by upping it 50% and see how that feels.
as it stands in the stock game, compared to real life, you will get too much damage from depth charges as it is and its worse for touching bottom (not talking about running aground) so trying to set the sub on the bottom can easily destroy you.
