I've started playing the standard patched game on realistic settings. I still have free cam because I'm a graphics whore and I am in love with watching ships explode! I've been fighting myself NOT to use it when evading escorts. Its hard to fight the urge but it makes them seem so much harder to shake that way, esp in the shallows.
I finally got a battleship kill in my new Gato since I've been playing on these settings. I stumbled across a task force coming up between The Celebes and Borneo. It had one line of three or four Fuso's and at least one line of heavy cruisers. They came to me so I sat my boat near the bottom and waited a bit off to the side. I made a dash in and fire my fore tubes off and dove and headed south. I got enough of a hit on the Fuso with two of the torps to slow her to 9 knots with a pretty nasty list. I missed and fuso with the rest but hit Mugami with one of my torps that I (luckly) forgot to set the depth on.
After the TF got far enough away I surfaced and looped out in front of the crippled ship, came in and killed it. When I went back to the Mugami she was pretty much dead in the water bow down and listing to the port. I didnt want to waste a torp so I tried to hit her underside with my deck gun. Even the keel which was exposed because of her bow being under water was immune to my deck gun. I don't know if I spent reknown on the larger deck gun or not, I'd have to check when I get home but either way even the belly of a cruiser (fore of her screws) cant be popped with a deck gun.
It makes sense but I was hoping for an Achilles heel... no luck with the deck gun.
