I have sunk many freighters using the Deck Gun myself. It's challenging and fun, too. Don't forget to use the TBT for range and azimuth. And, don't forget to use the SHIFT key with the UP/DOWN Arrows to slew the elevation faster. Saves torpedoes, but, be careful - the modern freighters have some BIG guns.
