I think the reasoning was high speed meant less of a chance of being hit plus less screw noise of only one ship as opposed to a group
Impossible for a sub to catch up with them submerged and a struggle surfaced
Didnt always work though as once in a while a uboat was in the perfect position or took a chance at a shot
