Nope, I was a Boiler Technician on the USN destroyer Jonas Ingram (DD 938). I loved that old ship...only thing that was "automatic" was steam drum level (feed pump pressure and feedwater control valve). Everything else was completely "hands on". This made for lots of fun on sea and anchor details. As a burnerman...you opened the steam valve to the air blowers, then you increased fuel oil feed to your running burners. If you needed more burners, you manually opened the air register on the next one and cut in fuel to it. I LOVED being a burnerman on Sea and Anchor detail! I'll dig up my old pics and post a few.
