That one stumped me at first too.
You can't go attacking head on this time. Set up a couple of machine guns and a rifle squad in your 1 trench and just mow the enemy waves down. Don't even try to attack. They will lower their morale and yours will stay very high. When the warning comes that their morale is low, then send your units like crazy and have a gas attack on their rear trench.

Yeps  , yesterday I finish the german campaign. My tactic was the one you described. I old the waves of attacks and when available the mortars and artillery barrage, I used it to on their trenches.
After the 6th mission, the game was pretty easy. Loved the tank duel!
