Your exactly right Banjo.
The Range estimate button is having the
sonar man give you the "estimated" range (which can be affected by his abilities and experience).
When you do it yourself by setting the realitive bearing of the contact on the right bearing dial and asking for the range by moving the toggle switch. The "estimated" range will appear on the message board readout.
But, if you click the toggle switch for sending range to the Position Keeper you will see the range back at the PK different than the estimated range of the message board. The "nuts-on" correct range is showing in the Position Keeper. Use either the sonar man's range or the message board readout of range as an
estimate. Sending the range to the PK after you do it yourself is
accurate, dead on.
