Noobie Start Up Question

I have a new, clean installation of SH3 on my hard drive.

I have next updated with the 1.4 patch successfully.

I have enabled the Generic Mod Enabler-JSGME v1.4.1.50. Running this mod has established a MOD folder in my SH3 directory.

I have d/l and unzipped both SH3 Commander v2.6 and Grey Wolves v1.1a into the MOD folder generated by JSGME.

When I activate the JSGME it shows on the left side of the set up screen both SH3 Commander and Grey Wolves 1.1a mods available to activate.

QUESTIONS...(So I don't screw up!):

1. I have played and passed successfully 2 of the training academy missions. CAN I STILL GO AHEAD AND ACTIVATE THE 2 MODS VIA JSGME without a problem? Have I messed up the "clean install requirement already?

2. If the above is okay, which of the two mods should I activate thru JSGME first, or does it matter?

TXS for any help.

You dont activate either of them through JSGME .

HunterICX 10-19-06 05:36 PM

1. you dont need JSGME to install the both mods

2. the order is Sh3 Patched 1.4b -> install the GW mod by clicking on the executable (.exe) -> install Sh3commander

3. enjoy the hunt

New to the game, but have spent a lot of time reading posts/threads here.

From my recollection, the mod enabler has been highly recommended as the way to go regarding modding SH3. By using the mod enabler, if I find myself way over my head with GW, I can quickly and easily remove it and revert back to the plain Vanilla SH3.

Am I missing something?

The order of installation via the mod enabler???...

1. GW.

2. SH3 Commander.

TXS

SH3 Commander is a seperate application, external, that you launch befor SH3.
SH3 commander should not be in your mods directory. Use the exe to install it.

You can use JSGME to enable GW. You have it in the correct location, the mods directory. When you do enable it, it may take a few minutes before it finishes. (It's working with a couple Gb of data.)

The .exe for GW is just a file extractor. You can type in a path other than the default SH3 directory and manage the files just like any other mod.

kk, my $0.02 here.

SH3 Commander runs independant of yet concurrent with SHIII. You can use JSGME to install Grey Wolves. In fact, I highly recommend that you do it that way, as JSGME backs up files instead of just overwriting and replacing them.

You start with a clean, unmodded install of SHIII then patch it to 1.4 (which you've already done). Next use JSGME to load GW1.1a. Activate it from the left side; it'll take several minutes to load, as it's a rather large mod to install.

SH3 Commander (iirc) shouldn't be in the MOD folder. Mine isn't, at any rate; it's in its own folder in program files. To properly use it you first run SH3 Commander, then load and run SHIII.

This is just a quicky explanation. If you need more detail let me know, k?

OK...Thanks to all.

It sounds like what I should do is:

1. Activate GW via JSGME.

2. Then run the SH3 Commander via its on execute routine, not thru JSGME.

3. Run SH3.

PS-The prior completed naval academy missions won't be a problem with items 1 and 2 above...correct?

change 1
dont use the JSGME to install TGW1.1a just press the Executable file under the files what u downloaded...

small mods for example skins require JSGME , supermods have a stand alone .exe file that install the game for u

To install:
The GW Alpha 3 mod files are in JGSME format however you can also paste it directly over a clean installation of Silent Hunter III. To do this just save the patch and decompress it into a personal document. Then go inside the patch files, copy the "data" folder and paste it over the data folder found just inside your Silent Hunter III directory.

If you use JGSME... be aware that it takes several minutes for JGSME to enable the GW patch files because of its size. I have a pretty fast processor and it takes me about 5 minutes to enable on my own system. Just copy the Grey Wolves Mod folder to your SilentHunterIII/Mods folder and enable.

That's straight from Grey Wolves own readme document.

Run SH3 once before commander (it will tell you anyway) and dont forget your options on the SH3 options page when you run SH3. (sound, video). I found that when i install grey wolves it for some reason sets the crew voices level down so i put it back to normal level .

kylania 10-19-06 06:50 PM

As others have said, SH3 Commander is seperate program.

However GW can be installed via JSGME if you ever need to roll it back and put on different mods or something. It's probably just as well that you install it on it's own, but the option is there for either install method. :)

P_Funk 10-19-06 08:50 PM

I haven't ever used JSGME to install GW. However doesn't th e JSGME approach to installing GW require a differernt version of GW, one which is not in .exe installer format? I can see that I could just install GW from the installer into an empty folder and then copy that to my MODS folder yet that is a very inefficient way of doing things. Isn't there a JSGME version of GW up for dload?

As for SH3 Cmdr I think people haven't phrased what they're saying properly when explaining how to use it with SH3.

Sh3 Cmdr is a program which utilizes a GUI to modify SH3 to your wishes. You can use it to change a multitude of options the game doesn't let you and it also lets you create Careers and customize their specifics. Finally once all that is done you don't just start SH3 but you start it by hitting the Launch SH3 button in SH3 Cmdr. Not doing this meansthat the option changes aren't enabled.

The order of installation is SH3, Patch, Mods, SH3 Cmdr. How you install mods is up to you but have them installed prior to running SH3 Cmdr because it changes ,any files subtly.

You can use the auto-install GW 1.1a version with JSGME. During installation of GW 1.1a just change the installation path and direct it to JSGME's mod folder.

IIRC you may have to create a "header" folder (i.e GW 1.1a) as I think the installer will only create the data folder. The file structure in JSGME should be as follows...GW 1.1a/data/....

That's what I was assuming. Good to know.
